Measures of Repeatable Change Capability

Repeatable change management methodology and processes are put in place and are used more consistently across projects, programs and the portfolio.

As organisations continue to develop their change management capability, repeatable change management methodology and processes are put in place and are used more consistently across projects, programs and the portfolio. You’re seeing the evolution of capability across the four key components of change maturity—People, Process, Structure and Tools & Technology.

Change Management Delivery is shifting from being dependent on specific individuals and there is a standardised methodology and approach to managing change emerging across projects and the broader organisation. Project budgets include funding for specialist change management resources; although they are likely to still be focussed on communication support and training.

From a Change Management Practitioner perspective, you would be demonstrating effective skills in Communications & Engagement, Education & Learning, Leadership & Sponsorship, and Coaching – and be able to apply them consistently and align your change management principles, practices and activities with the change management methodology in your program or organisation.

The Peak Change Blueprint defines the fundamentals and day-to-day tactics we use in business, project, program and portfolio change. These are the key skills that make the difference between a good change management practitioner and a great change management professional.

Building your foundational skills in Tactical Change makes the transition to higher maturity levels easier for you as a practitioner and your organisation. Find out more about developing your Tactical Change Skills.

Moving to the Next Change Management Maturity Level

It is not unusual for organisations to experience an imbalance with maturity across Strategy & Leadership, Business Readiness & Adoption and Change Management Delivery. We know that project change management capability is the easiest of the three change management capability focus areas to develop.

Research tells us that building Change Management Delivery capability is the easiest of the three change management maturity focus areas to develop. Remember, effective Change Management Capability is supported by four key components—People, Process, Structure and Tools & Technology. These need to be present across all three focus areas of change maturity—Strategy & Leadership, Business Readiness & Adoption and Change Management Delivery—not just change management delivery.

Growing your Strategy & Leadership Capability

From a practitioner perspective you will be working with integrated change management principles and practices that are embedded within the organisation’s project delivery framework. Project delivery teams and change leaders are trained in change management principles and practices as a way of working in the organisation rather than it being a separate ‘thing’ to learn.

Organisations should start to consider establishing a Change Management Office function to support the growth of change management capability across the organisation. The Change Management Office would be responsible for coordinating change management capability development and the continuous improvement of change management principles and practices. They would also facilitate the Change Management Community of Practice, Change Agent Network, and the induction of change agents and sponsors.

As part of the continuous improvement of change management principles and practices, the Change Management Office would link professional body competency standards to change management methodology and education and learning programs.

Effective Change Management Capability is supported by four key components—People, Process, Structure and Tools & Technology. These need to be present across all three focus areas of change maturity—Strategy & Leadership, Business Readiness & Adoption and Change Management Delivery.
